Rubens, Princely Portraits, exhibition
From Wednesday, October 4 2017 to Sunday, January 14 2018
Rubens the portraitist.
Rubens was a protean artist whose important work as a court portrait painter, an essential element of his career, is still little known. First and foremost he saw himself as a painter of grand historical subjects, and yet he excelled in the area of formal portraits, destined for the most important courts of Europe. Valued for his educated, erudite conversation, he also played an important diplomatic role and enjoyed a social status that was unrivalled among artists of his time.
This exhibition immerses the visitor in the diplomatic intrigues of the 17th century through the portraits of Marie de' Medici, Louis XIII of France and Philip IV of Spain, with portraits by Rubens and a few of his famous contemporaries (Pourbus, Champaigne, Velázquez, Van Dyck, and so on.).
